This blog post is about what I saw on the first page of google when I searched “NCLEX tutor”. I’m also going to give you some simple guidelines on how to find a good NCLEX tutor.

So, there are a lot of choices out there for nursing students looking for help after they failed the NCLEX. And I’m beginning to feel a bit bad for them! This is because a lot of people are calling themselves an NCLEX tutor and I’m not sure they actually are one! Also, online tutoring has exploded in the last couple years.
There was barely anyone calling themselves an NCLEX Tutor 4 years ago. But let’s be honest here: there’s some good money to be made tutoring students, especially those that have no idea where to go next. As a student, you want something quality and the choices can be overwhelming.
Disclaimer: this is only my opinion. I don’t get any money from any of these companies below.
This is what I saw. I’m going to break it down for you.

As you can see from the picture above, the first 4 results are from large tutoring companies: wyzant, tutor the people, care and hey tutor. Indeed is not a tutoring company, they are a search engine for jobs.
The tutors for these companies are not employees. Each tutor submits their information and makes a profile. They may have to pass a simple test in order to become “qualified” to tutor for that subject. The tutor gives a percentage of how much they charge ( up to 40%) to the company.
I’m almost positive this is how it works for most large online tutoring companies.
I know all this because I worked for wyzant for a couple months. I took my “profile” off wyzant because they wanted about 30% of what I charged. I sorta felt like that was highway robbery when I wasn’t actual employee of them. I figured I could just go on my own and see if students could find me on google and facebook.
As a student, should I use a tutor from one of these big tutoring companies?
The answer is yes, you can! I was once on wyzant when I was first starting out and I thought I was a great tutor! However, if you are looking for a tutor specific for the NCLEX on these big company websites, here are some basic considerations:
- The tutor is a Registered Nurse (you can check the Board of Nursing website for that state)
- The tutor actually tutors nursing subjects (it sort of annoys me when someone says they tutor for the nclex, but also tutors chemistry and the MCATs – seriously, how can someone be that good in that many subjects? Impossible.)
- Try to find the tutor on their business website instead, such as their actual website or facebook page. The website will give you a better idea on how professional they are. Just google their “name” and “nclex tutor”. Then contact them through their website (or facebook page)
- The tutor has testimonials that seem legitimate. Unfortunately, some testimonials can be fake or the tutor can pay someone to write them.
See if you can contact the person that wrote a testimonial and ask how their experience was. - Don’t pay a big chunk of money upfront
- Ask to pay afterwards if you are unsure if the tutor is legitimate
- Make sure the tutor is willing to talk with you on the phone to answer any questions you may have. It’s OK to be on the phone with them for up to 30 minutes and not to be charged for that.
OK, should I use “Wyzant” then?
Yes, wyzant has legit NCLEX tutors on their site. But follow the steps above to find a good one.
There’s one exception about paying: you have to submit your bank info to wyzant before you meet with the tutor. Then after the session is over, the tutor will submit the time you spent together. The tutor will get paid and the 30% will go to wyzant. This is regardless if you didn’t like the session. However, I’m sure if you complain, you’ll get your money back.
What about all the Ads?
There are so many ads!! I feel like the first page is basically ads! Personally, I always ignore ads. If someone has to pay to get their name out there, they probably need to step it up in a different way. Just sayin’.
There’s also “Tutor the People”
This is another big tutoring company. As a student looking for NCLEX help, I would X this one right away. Why? Because the three tutors they profile are all medical students or medical doctors. You want a nurse who’s taken the NCLEX. I didn’t even bother to look further at this site.
What’s up with “Hey Tutor”?
This company wouldn’t even let me look at a tutor’s profile unless I submitted my name and phone number. Then, when I wanted to look at the tutors, I got a message that a representative from the company would be calling me in 20 minutes. I don’t think so. I want to actually read about tutors before I talk to anyone on the phone. And if I do talk to anyone on the phone, I want it to be the tutor I just looked at.
What about “Care”?
I thought this website was for nannies and home health aides. It appears that they have tutors now too. This company did have one “NCLEX tutor” on it, but they weren’t a nurse. I actually loved his profile pic. But sorry buddy, I’ll pass.
Is there more?
Of course! There’s tons! The search of “NCLEX tutor” goes on and on. I can’t believe that these huge companies come up first when they don’t even have NCLEX tutors on them!
I also think that there are some very good NCLEX tutors out there, but not showing up on page 1 of Google.
